You won’t watch American Idol on TV

I am excited about my idea today.  You might be wondering why I keep talking about this web 3.0 thing.  Live streaming interactive content is coming to take away your radio and your television.  It is going to be fascinating.

Today, my idea was spawned from a new Internet phenomena that is being talked about quite a bit.  It is taking Internet video to the next level and people are wondering how brands are going to capitalize on it.  It is called chatroulette and brings new meaning to web 3.0

The idea today will ride the wave of American Idol, although it could probably be applied to a lot of things.  We are going to combine ustream.tv with digg.com and focus on a musical vertical. . .  (This is easily applied to Dancing with the Stars, America has Talent etc. . . )

The Market: American Idol is typically the number one show of the week with roughly 24 million viewers.  People love the ability to interact with the television and cast their vote.    Around 100,000 people audition for American Idol each season .  Remember, these are just solo artists. . . bands do not get to audition.  Television viewers only get to see a fraction of the process.

The Pitch: The idea is for a 24 hour 7 day a week web show.  This show would allow indie solo artists and bands to perform one song.   Viewers would go to the website and watch the song, they would have the ability to boo them off stage (via votes down).  Viewers could rate them as terrible yet funny (for comic relief. . . remember William Hung?) .  Finally, they could give the best artists a thumbs up.  The best talent floats to the top.

How It Works: People would line up out the door to perform.  All you would need is a web cam and the comfort of your own home.  Viewers love to be entertained, and they love to interact.  Now not only can you vote, but you can actually give the band positive or negative feedback.  Imagine, now you are sitting in Simon Cowell’s seat!

Monetize: Where there are eyeballs, there is advertising dollars, simple as that.  Or, charge a $1 entry fee.  It comes to around 500 bucks a day. . . I’d take it.

I will be honest, American Idol has zero interest to me.  However, I forced myself to think about this.  I think that so far it has the highest payout verses little and ease of investment.

Just my thoughts. . . Watch for it, because someone will do this.

  1. I loved the final 5 American idol group song last night. It was moving to see Aaron Kelly got rid of however I believe the other singers were better singers so he had to go!

  2. I saw American Idol winner Lee has just signed up to RCA records. Cannot wait to hear his new album.

  3. Shaun Nagy says:

I really think Donald Trump would be a much better American Idol judge than Harry Connick Jr. – Trump isn’t afraid to say what he thinks and can be as outspoken as Simon Cowell.
